SELOUS GAME RESERVE 2 DAYS SAFARI

Selous Game Reserve, big game reserve, southeastern Tanzania. It is named after Frederick Selous, an explorer, naturalist, and soldier. It covers an area of more than 17,000 square miles and bestrides a complex of rivers including Ruaha, Kilombero, and Rufiji. Its vegetation is woodland, with patches of strong hardwood forests and some of the finest virgin bush left in Africa.

The reserve, established in 1922, holds one of the biggest remaining concentration of big-tusked elephants and big-maned lions, as well as such other mammals as leopard, buffalo, zebra, rhinoceros and many antelopes. This virtually inaccessible reserve was opened to visitors in 1963 when hunting tracks were constructed.

The Northern Section of Selous is home to a connections of channels and lagoons that runs off the Rufiji River. This beautiful landscape offers a water supply for the area game and towards the end of the dry season the concentration of animals around these water sources is phenomenal.

The excellent time to visit the Selous is during the June to October dry season when wildlife congregates around stable water.  A fly-in place, this virtually unexplored reserve is rarely visited in isolation so we advise combining a Selous safari with a stay at Katavi or Ruaha - other savannah parks in Southern Central Tanzania equally as wild as Selous, a beautiful rainforest on Lake Tanganyika, complete with forest birds, chimpanzees and dazzling clouds of butterflies.

Day one: Fly from Zanzibar to Selous at 14:00 Transfer to Camp. Afternoon boat excursion or Game rive on the Rufiji River. Dinner and overnight at the camp.

Day two: Early breakfast then walking safari or game drive. Lunch and rest, Depart at Zanzibar at 09:45hrs/15:15hrs.
